Giant Hail Turns Halloween Into a Disaster

On Saturday 31 October 2020, a series of supercell thunderstorms tore across South East Queensland, and Ipswich copped the worst of it. Giant hailstones as large as 14 cm in diameter battered the region, part of an event that produced nine supercells and more than 296,000 lightning strikes across the south-east in a single afternoon.

Thousands of homes across Springfield, Springfield Lakes, Rosewood, Thagoona and Willowbank suffered extensive roof damage, collapsed internal ceilings and major water damage. Within 24 hours, the Insurance Council of Australia declared the event a catastrophe. The final bill exceeded $1.05 billion across more than 44,000 claims.

The Damage That Kept Surfacing

Hail that size doesn't just dent a roof — it fractures tiles, punches through sheeting and damages flashing, ridge capping and solar. Much of it was invisible from the ground, and for many Ipswich homeowners the leaks and ceiling stains appeared weeks or months later.

What to Do After a Hailstorm

1. Stay safe. Keep clear of fallen powerlines, broken glass and unstable roofing.

2. Document the damage. Take time-stamped photos and videos of your roof, ceilings, windows and vehicles.

3. Get a professional roof inspection. A trained inspector finds the hidden damage that insurers later try to dismiss as wear and tear.

4. Lodge your claim promptly. The sooner you report, the stronger your claim.

The 2020 Halloween storm was extreme, but storms of this kind are a regular feature of the region's climate.

For homeowners from Springfield to Rosewood, the lesson is to stay ahead of it: maintain your roof, keep your policy current, and get a professional inspection after any serious storm. Book your free Ipswich roof inspection today.
