Gold Coast Hail Warning: Live Updates, 3 November

A severe thunderstorm warning for large and possibly giant hailstones is current for the Southeast Coast district, which includes the Gold Coast. This page carries the Bureau's updates as they are issued, newest first.

Key points

  • 6:28 pm — Storms in the Scenic Rim, Southern Downs, Western Downs and South Burnett have temporarily eased; redevelopment remains possible.

  • 6:27 pm — Warning renewed for large, possibly giant hailstones across the Southeast Coast district. Next update due 9:30 pm.

  • 4:07 pm — 106 km/h wind gust recorded at Wellcamp Airport.

What the Bureau has warned so far

The 6:27 pm warning covers the Central Highlands and Coalfields, Capricornia, Wide Bay and Burnett, Darling Downs and Granite Belt, and Southeast Coast districts. Named locations so far are inland: Warwick, Toowoomba, Kingaroy, Gatton, Cherbourg and Boonah (BOM, Nov 26).

What has already been measured

A 106 km/h wind gust was recorded at Wellcamp Airport at 4:07 pm, and 3 to 4 cm hail was observed around Miles at about 3 pm (BOM, Nov 26). Both sit well inland of the coast. The Gold Coast is inside the warned district but has not been named as an affected location.

What to do while it is still moving

The Bureau's advice is to park undercover away from trees, stay away from windows if there is giant hail, and go inside a strong building (BOM, Nov 26). Checking a roof is a job for afterwards, in daylight. Hail damage to a metal roof is often invisible from the ground.
