Warwick Hail Damage: 4-5 cm Across the Southern Downs

The Bureau of Meteorology observed hail of 4 to 5 cm in the Warwick area late on the afternoon of 3 November 2026. It was the largest hail reported anywhere in that day’s storms across southern Queensland.

Key points

  • The Bureau observed 4 to 5 cm hail in the Warwick area late on 3 November — the largest of the day.

  • Radar’s strongest Southern Downs bands are at Allora and Berat, both 5 cm, just north of Warwick.

  • A 106 km/h gust was recorded at Wellcamp Airport at 4:07 pm.

Where the storm sat on the Southern Downs

Radar puts the strongest bands just north of town, at Allora and Berat, both reading 5 cm. Pratten and Thane read 4 cm, with Greymare and Dalveen at 3 cm (HailTracker, Nov 26). Warwick’s own suburbs sit lower in the swathe: Rosenthal Heights at 2 cm, with Sladevale, Glengallan, Yangan, Freestone and Womina at 1 cm.

The Bureau's figure and the radar disagree

The Bureau observed 4 to 5 cm in the Warwick area, while radar barely registers the town itself. Both can be true: an observation is a single point where someone measured a stone, and the radar band is an estimate across a grid square (BOM, Nov 26).

A 106 km/h gust came with it

A 106 km/h wind gust was recorded at Wellcamp Airport, west of Toowoomba, at 4:07 pm the same afternoon (BOM, Nov 26). Wind matters as much as stone size for a roof. Gusts lift and flex sheeting, and a roof can be opened up without a single dent being visible from the ground.
