Large hail hits Redbank Plains and Ripley in Ipswich storms
Large hail fell across Ipswich on Tuesday afternoon, 27 October, from Ripley in the south to Redbank Plains in the east. The Bureau recorded 5 cm hail at Ripley at 3:30 pm, while Redbank Plains residents photographed stones of 5 to 7 cm.

What Redbank Plains residents reported
At 3:25 pm, dangerous thunderstorms were detected near Redbank Plains, with destructive winds and hail. Residents sent storm chasers photos of stones 5 to 7 cm across, and video showed hail carpeting lawns and around parked cars. One local also reported damage to their roof.
Ripley, Flinders View and Yamanto on the Bureau’s list
The Bureau recorded 3 cm hail at Yamanto and 4 cm at Flinders View at 3:25 pm, then 5 cm at Ripley at 3:30 pm (BOM, Oct 26). Five centimetres is a little larger than a golf ball. A storm chaser’s photo from Ripley showed a stone over 4 cm against a ruler.

Giant hail near Augustine Heights
Next door, a storm chaser reported locally giant hail near Augustine Heights, and ice piled up across Augustine Heights and Redbank Plains. The storm then raced south-east, leaving a swath of golf ball to tennis ball-sized hail from near Ipswich towards Jimboomba.
