An Out-of-Season Shock

On Friday 26 May 2023, an unusual late-season hail event swept across the Hunter region of NSW. Large hailstones of 3–5 cm, and locally giant hail of 5–6 cm, were reported — some of the largest hail ever recorded in Australia during the month of May.

The severe thunderstorm brought golf-ball-sized hail and powerful winds across Newcastle, the Hunter Valley and the Central Coast. Power was cut to more than 2,100 properties across Newcastle suburbs, and large trees were brought down — including at Mount View High School in Cessnock, where they fell onto cars and disrupted the safe exit of students and staff.

Why Out-of-Season Hail Catches Homeowners Out

A May hailstorm is the kind of event nobody expects — which is exactly why so much of the damage goes unchecked. Hail of this size bruises tiles, dents metal roofing and cracks flashing and solar, and with winter rain following close behind, small fractures quickly turn into leaks.

What to Do After a Hailstorm

1. Stay safe. Keep clear of fallen trees, powerlines and broken glass.

2. Document the damage. Take time-stamped photos and videos of your roof, windows and vehicles.

3. Get a professional roof inspection. A trained inspector finds the damage you can't see from the ground.

4. Lodge your claim promptly. Early reporting strengthens your claim.
